The candidate will become a trusted advisor to the teams building new web services and related products, while helping shape those services and experiences so that they delight millions of customers.
The successful candidate must be curious, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, and demonstrate sound judgment even in ambiguous situations.
Compensation based on experience and includes equity compensation.
Some domestic travel is required. This attorney can sit in Seattle, WA, Los Angeles, CA, Silicon Valley or in Arlington, VA.

Qualifications:
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of legal experience (with at least two years at a law firm) as a patent attorney
- Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar
- Registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Understanding of a wide variety of technology areas including: web services, big data, machine learning, virtualization, data storage, databases, and operating systems.
- Understanding of copyright law as applied to software, datasets, and machine learning models.
- Ability to manage IP related activities for many business and technology teams in different locales, including training the business on patent filing and strategy, idea harvesting, management of patent application preparation and prosecution, and assisting in patent acquisitions, licensing, and litigation.
- Ability to counsel Amazon Lawyers and the business on a wide range of IAP topics, such as software licensing, trademarks, and trade secrets.
- Ability to work independently while being able to contribute successfully to cross-functional teams.
- Effective oral and written communication skills in communicating business and legal issues to a wide variety of audiences including developers, engineers, business leaders, and legal professionals, at all levels of the organization.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through and meet deadlines.
- Have personally prepared and prosecuted at least 20 patent applications.
