Matar advises clients with respect to mergers and acquisitions, private equity, venture capital finance, and general business and corporate law. As a trusted adviser to his clients, Matar is known for his detail-oriented and business-first approach. He regularly works with private equity principals, business owners and management teams to help them chart efficient paths through transactions, commercial negotiations and board-level decisions. Matar also provides operating companies and business owners with a wide range of outside general counsel services, including commercial contracting, and guidance on corporate governance, and regulatory and technology licensing matters.

While rooted in Charlotte’s community and business sector, the corporate transactions Matar handles have national and international reach. His cross-border business transactions and cross-cultural negotiations experience adds a unique breadth of experience to his practice. He regularly advises international businesses in the formation of US subsidiaries and the commencement of US operations.

In 2019, Matar was selected to participate in the Lex Mundi Cross-Border M&A Summit in Monterey, CA. Matar worked with a team of transactional attorneys from the United States, France, Sweden, Latvia, Poland, Panama, Canada, Brazil, Ghana and Chile on several M&A assignments.

Matar understands how fast technology is changing the landscape of the professional services industry and he remains convinced that law firms need to stay on the cutting edge of innovation though the deployment of technology in the delivery of legal services to their clients. As a member of the Knowledge Management Committee of his firm’s Corporate and Securities Group, Matar regularly evaluates new technologies and applications for incorporation into his firm’s transactional practice.

Matar is a member of his firm’s Transatlantic Lawyer Network, which brings together eight associate attorney’s from the United States and the United Kingdom for a collaborative learning experience focused on the influence that innovation and technology are having on our current and future delivery of legal services.

Matar grew up in Senegal, West Africa. He has lived and gone to school in three continents, and has a strong business background that complements and supports his legal practice. Through these various cultural and professional experiences, Matar has been regularly exposed to unexpected information. Over the years, he has developed an excellent ability to process and produce complex and unexpected information by looking beyond the obvious on almost every single issue, which allows him to work with colleagues from different offices and practice areas in creative and interactive ways so everyone gets smarter in mutual development relationships. This is the type of creative thinking that puts Matar in the best possible position to solve his current clients’ needs.

Matar has firsthand experience managing bold projects that matter. He led the development of a UN funded, medium-scale solar energy systems project in West Africa, which continues to provide power to several villages. He galvanized local residents, formed a nonprofit organization to oversee the projects, and negotiated various agreements with local power companies and contractors. Matar utilizes the same deal-structure and leadership skills for his private equity fund, venture capital fund and middle market company clients.

Matar is admitted to practice law in North Carolina, New York and Massachusetts.
