George W. Madison has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate as general counsel of the Treasury Department. In this position, he will serve as senior legal and policy adviser to the Treasury Secretary and other senior department officials. Mr. Madison also has responsibility for all legal work in the department. He is the former executive vice president and general counsel of TIAA-CREF, and was a member of its executive management team. He previously served in a similar capacity with Comerica Incorporated, as well as a partner in the firm of Mayer, Brown & Platt. Mr. Madison holds a B.S. degree from New York University’s Stern School of Business, a J.D. from Columbia Law School, and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School.
