Position: Director & Senior Corporate Counsel, Global Data Analytics and Digital Platform

Position Overview
As Director and Senior Counsel, Global Data Analytics and Digital Platform you will work across Autodesk on global legal matters associated with data use and analytics, as well as provide critical legal support to our Digital Platform and Experience (DPE) business division. Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, and partnering closely with business leaders, you will advise on and manage legal affairs on a broad range of issues regarding Autodesk’s collection, use, disclosure, or disposal of data for compliance with law, policy, and best practices. You will manage a team of legal professionals to provide the company with global, strategic, and business-focused legal counsel on key business and operational activities in the DPE division.


  • As Legal Business Partner to the Data Analytics and Automation (DAA) team within DPE, you will manage the legal affairs and act as primary legal point-of-contact for the business, identifying and applying relevant laws and advising leaders on strategic risk positions. You will provide counsel on a broad range of issues related to Autodesk’s complex and evolving infrastructure, products, data-driven business models and offerings, and a variety of strategic programs and operational platforms for digitization of the customer, partner, and employee experience. Areas of focus include big data analytics and use, contract, data protection, intellectual property, consumer protection and competition, marketing, mergers and acquisitions, compliance, corporate policy and any other issues impacting Autodesk’s goals and long-term strategies
  • As Global Data Analytics subject matter expert for the Autodesk Legal Department, you will have overall responsibility for legal compliance and enabling business innovation in data operations, data analytics, and insights-based services and products for internal and external customers. Key responsibilities, include:
    • Analytics Expertise. Develop and maintain expertise in the law related to data use and analytics, including privacy, consumer protection, security, intellectual property, marketing, and developing areas including machine learning
    • Legal Analytics Team Leadership. Manage a team of legal professionals directly, and indirectly. Act as lead / coordinating attorney (working with legal colleagues, LBPs, Privacy team, and others) on global data analytics legal issues
    • Data Governance. Act as legal representative in various forums regarding data governance, enable key data initiatives with strategic data analytics legal inputs (including the development and drafting of data analytics policy, guidance, and self-service knowledge assets)
    • Government Relations and Public Policy. Act as the primary attorney to work with the Government Relations team to enable Autodesk to develop a strategic public-facing POV and to influence legislation and policy regarding data use and analytics
    • Compliance. Working closely with the privacy and compliance legal teams, you’ll partner across Autodesk with security, product, DPE engineering teams and others to:
      • Design and implement policies, processes and controls to manage legal and compliance risk associated with data analytics projects and services
      • Enable the development of data analytic products and services while ensuring legal compliance and risk mitigation
      • Develop trainings and counsel business and technical teams to mitigate legal risks of a myriad new data analytics uses: customer-facing analytics services and products, operational analytics, internal business insights and license compliance analytics programs
    • Corporate Development. Working with the company’s Corporate Development and Integration teams, you identify and mitigate data risks in acquisition and integration of acquired assets and entities into Autodesk’s data ecosystems
    • Legal Department Leadership. You’ll have primary responsibility for the creation of content and execution of programs designed to increase the overall capability and knowledge of data analytics across the legal department
      • Lead our Legal Analytics Working Group (LAWG) comprised of attorneys advising core data-focused businesses. Build and leverage LAWG to enable consistent advice for sales, product, marketing, and technical teams during the full data analytical lifecycle – from concept to data processing to delivery
      • Participate in, or lead, Legal Department Goals focused on data analytics
      • Propose, design, and manage Legal Department initiatives designed to expose more legal colleagues to data analytics issues


Minimum Qualifications 

  • JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school; member in good standing of the California Bar
  • 10 years in-house experience at a technology company
  • Significant experience and expertise in data use and analytics issues, including data products and platforms, artificial intelligence/machine learning, and the management of legal risks associated with a variety of data analytics insights programs (including operational insights, internal business metrics and product improvement insights, customer-facing insights)
  • Strong expertise in global data privacy regulation (including GDPR, ePrivacy, PIPEDA, and various US state-level laws)
  • Superior business acumen; ability to use business context to generate creative, pragmatic legal solutions to achieve business objectives while mitigating risks
  • Experience managing a team of legal professionals (attorneys and/or paralegals)
  • Outstanding judgment and knowledge of the law
  • Truly exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications 

  • CIPP/E and/or CIPP/US certification from the IAPP
  • Prior experience in a well-regarded law firm focusing on data analytics and technology transactions for software and/or platform companies
  • Experience providing legal support to product development and engineering teams in a SaaS software or PaaS company
  • Experience with sophisticated and diverse business models (especially subscription-based models)
