2019 Seattle Inclusion Summit
MCCA partnered with Microsoft in 2018 to launch our Inclusive Leader Program (“Program”). Our Inclusive Leader Program consists of three components: (i) an inclusion index survey developed by Russell Reynolds Associates to measure and benchmark our profession; (ii) an inclusive leader training and best practices to create awareness; and (iii) inclusion summits with other members to share best practices and strategies to create an inclusive workplace leveraging our research. We launched the Program to address the growing need for diverse and inclusive leaders to disrupt homogeneity in legal leadership.
To accrue the dividends that diversity and inclusion (“D&I”) has the potential to produce, bold and inclusive leadership is required both on an individual and a systemic, organization-wide level. Diversity by itself is not enough. An organization with a reputation for inclusiveness becomes a magnet, attracting top diverse talent; in turn, that talent can better tap markets’ potential, whether in emerging economies or among a broader set of consumers.
The Seattle Inclusion Summit (“Summit”) is a continuation of our 2018 Program. The Summit will focus on workplace culture and the challenges of creating a culture of inclusion. General counsel from leading companies will share what they are doing to improve diversity of our profession. Specifically, they will share how they are pushing for more diversity with their outside counsel, including expectations, what’s worked and hasn’t. We will also host a talk about being courageous and how leaders can execute on their general counsel’s vision to create opportunities for engagement with outside counsel and learn more about how they are driving change internally.

Effective Strategies and Leveraging Resources to Improve Diversity, Inclusion and Equity
What tools are in-house lawyers leveraging, if any, to improve diversity internally and to create a culture of inclusion? How are those tools being shared externally? The panel will discuss what has worked, what’s being tried and how they are leveraging external sources to push for a more diverse profession. MCCA also will share its most recent research on bias interrupters and inclusive leadership and how the audience can leverage those.

Best Practices in Corporate Legal Departments and Collaborating with Outside Counsel to Improve Diversity & Accountability
Two years ago, MCCA invited general counsel to speak about best practices in their respective legal departments and how they collaborate with outside counsel to improve diversity and accountability. Since then, there has been a proliferation of similar discussions from concerned general counsel. We are starting to see progress that we have never seen before. Are these collaborative efforts and demands from clients really changing the landscape of the profession or are the macro changes in the global work culture that are forcing those change? Perhaps, both factors are creating the necessary changes.
Join us and learn how general counsel are collaborating with outside counsel to drive further change and one that is sustainable today.
