Podcasts of Groundbreaking Disability Conference Now Available

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association, along with the American Bar Association, sponsored the Second National Conference on the Employment of Lawyers with Disabilities this past June. A primary focus of the event was having corporate counsel hire lawyers with disabilities.

If you missed this ground breaking event, don’t worry: there are still opportunities to participate! Session 1: Making the Pledge to Hire Lawyers with Disabilities

Identifies current problems in the legal profession regarding the low numbers of lawyers with disabilities and emphasizes the need to include disability when employers think about diversity, as well as the conference's "Pledge for Change."

Session II: Transition from Law Student to Lawyer: Reasonable Accommodations in Law School and at Work

Learn about the practical and theoretical issues faced by law students with disabilities, their attainment of accommodations during school, and their role as advocates for themselves and their disabilities. The program also covers a student's experience in dealing with law school, the bar application process, and applying for employment. Other topics include universal design and the issue of intersectional discrimination for law students.

Session III: Employment of Lawyers with Disabilities

Discover what legal employers are looking for when hiring, as well as employers’ attitudes towards job applicants with disabilities; the program emphasizes the need for employers to evolve by integrating into their workforces those with disabilities.

Session IV: Best Practices for Mentoring, Retaining, and Promoting Lawyers with Disabilities

This session’s topic is post-hiring employment issues, including partnership tracks and promotions. The program begins with empirical data on the employment of lawyers with disabilities, followed by discussion of this data as it relates to retention and promotion of lawyers with disabilities.

Session V: Creating the Most Inviting Workplace for Lawyers with Disabilities

To create an inviting environment for lawyers with disabilities, this panel discusses how legal employers can become aware of their workplace/corporate culture so to better accommodate and integrate employees. Special attention is given to lawyers with "hidden disabilities."

Session VI: Best Accommodation Practices in the Legal Profession

Using a question and answer format between the moderator and panelists, this program discusses the legal and practical aspects of providing accommodations, including: how to request an accommodation; the interactive process; best accommodation practices being employed today; and what is and is not required by employers. This program is a must have for legal employers.

Session VII: Implementing the Pledge to Hire Lawyers with Disabilities

The concluding program encourages attendees and legal employers to diversify their workforce, particularly for those with disabilities. They explore strategies for diversification and solicit comments and questions from the audience.
